My Summer Internship in Bangkok - Faye Cheng

'My overseas internship experience at the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (HKETO) was a transformative journey that enriched both my professional and personal growth. This opportunity allowed me to delve into a dynamic work environment, fostering a deeper understanding of public relations and expanding my skill set.

Among the most satisfactory aspects was the exposure to the real-world working environment. It provided invaluable insights into strategic communication planning, media relations, and crisis management when working alongside seasoned PR professionals. Moreover, collaborating in a multicultural team not only broadened my perspectives, but also honed my adaptability and intercultural communication skills.

Furthermore, HKETO prioritised our development holistically. Apart from the professional experience, they offered a range of opportunities for personal growth. Outings, workshops, and interactions with professionals from various fields were organised. I got the chance to visit the Chinese embassy, Hutchison Ports and Kerry Logistics in Pattaya, as well as attending several business lunch seminars. These experiences not only broadened my horizons, but also enriched my social and networking skills. Engaging with individuals outside of my department brought unexpected benefits to my overall learning experience, allowing me to appreciate the multifaceted nature of the industry.

However, a challenge I encountered revolved around establishing connections with higher-ups. The director and department head were frequently on business trips, leaving them with limited time in the office. This scarcity of interaction hindered the opportunity for casual chats and the chance to build stronger bonds with them. Consequently, I missed out on valuable mentorship and insights that their experience could have provided. This situation also posed challenges when seeking guidance on intricate projects, leading to instances of ambiguity that I had to navigate independently.

Despite these challenges, I completely understood the circumstances that caused them. The fast-paced nature of the PR industry often demands professionals to be on the move. While I may have missed certain prospects for more personal interactions, I appreciate the immersive experience I gained from working on actual projects and overcoming hurdles independently.

Overall, this internship not only enhanced my career prospects, but also enriched my global perspective, making it an unforgettable chapter in my journey of self-discovery.'
