My Summer Internship at HKETO in Jakarta - Mike Yip

Hear from our alumnus Mike Yip, who studied Sociology, as he shares his first-hand experience of interning with HKETO in Jakarta under the ASEAN Internship Scheme in the 2024 summer, and how the internship has shaped his career aspirations!

“My responsibilities during the internship included assisting in research, maintaining databases, monitoring media reports on Hong Kong, translating articles, and creating daily media summaries. I also helped organising events related to commercial and public relations, and investment promotion, as well as offered on-site support whenever needed. One of my most exciting projects was participating in the organisation of the Jakarta International Dragon Boat Competition. From writing the history of the Dragon Boat Festival, taking photos at the event, acting as a receptionist at the HKETO booth, to distributing souvenirs, my involvement was extensive.

The internship was a life-changing learning experience that enhanced my understanding of international relations, trade dynamics, and cultural nuances in the ASEAN region. This hands-on experience not only expanded my knowledge but also honed my research, communication, and organisational skills, preparing me for a future career where I can make a meaningful impact in the field of social sciences, particularly in sociology.

The internship also exposed me to the complexities of event organisation and I gained insights into the intricacies of international business diplomacy. The experience is invaluable in developing my ability to navigate cross-cultural communication and collaboration, which is an essential skill for a career in sociology.”
