Meet Faye Cheng, a recent English graduate who took on an internship with the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (HKETO) Bangkok in the summer of 2023 under the ASEAN Internship Scheme for Hong Kong Higher Education Students. She is here to share why the internship is an experience like no other.
“My internship experience at HKETO Bangkok contributed to both my professional and personal growth. This opportunity allowed me to immerse myself in a dynamic work environment, gaining a deeper understanding of public relations and expanding my skill set.
One of the most rewarding aspects was the exposure to the real-world working environment. I gained invaluable insights into strategic communication planning, media relations, and crisis management by working alongside seasoned PR professionals. Moreover, collaborating in a multicultural team not only broadened my perspectives but also honed my adaptability and intercultural communication skills.
In addition to the professional experience, HKETO also arranged various outings, workshops, and interactions with professionals from different fields for the interns. I had the opportunity to visit the Chinese embassy, Hutchison Ports, and Kerry Logistics in Pattaya, as well as attend several business seminars. These experiences broadened my horizons and enriched my networking skills.
A challenge I encountered was that my work supervisors were not always available in the office to meet with me. However, this situation allowed me to enhance my problem-solving skills and learn to work independently. I appreciate the valuable experience gained from working on real-life projects and overcoming obstacles on my own.
Overall, this internship not only enhanced my career prospects but also enriched my global perspective, making it an unforgettable chapter in my journey of self-discovery.”
