With the support of the Tin Ka Ping Foundation, the “Taiwan Indigenous Culture and Sustainable Community Development Service Learning Tour” (台灣原住民文化及社區永續發展服務學習計劃) was successfully organised by OSA and IAO in May. The 10-day trip had attracted more than 60 students to enrol, with a total of 24 students selected to participate in this programme.
Led by two faculty and staff members, this service-learning tour took the students to Yilan, Taiwan, where they engaged in various meaningful activities, visits, and volunteer services in collaboration with the co-organising institution, National Ilan University. One faculty member and six students from National Ilan University also joined the tour.
The trip took students to two ecological tours and a beach cleanup, providing participants with a firsthand experience of engaging in sustainable development (ESG) practices, and understanding the importance of sustainable development goals (SDGs). These activities aimed to enhance students’ awareness of their personal and social responsibilities, and contribute to the sustainable development of communities and the environment. Participants also visited a primary school and organised various fun-filled workshops for the children.
On the tour, students also had the valuable opportunity to stay in an indigenous-operated homestay and engage in cultural activities with the Tayal (泰雅族) indigenous people. This allowed students to gain a deeper understanding of the indigenous life and culture of the Atayal, fostering meaningful cultural exchange.
Stay tuned for our updates on how you can be a part of our next Service Learning Tour!
